In a world as connected as ours its
hard to believe that there is true privacy anywhere. We are always on.
If not on our computers were on our tablets. When a tablet is out of
reach we are on our phones. You are hard pressed to not find someone
without their phone on them at all times. I know personally my mom can
never believe it when I miss a call because, according to her, "my phone doesn't leave my side".
The
interesting thing is that in all of the constant communication and over
sharing we self select to be a part of, we still expect a semblance of
privacy. I personally always find it amusing to watch the reactions of
people whenever Facebook has changed the layout of their page resulting
in a changed user experience. The meltdowns can be verging on insane. The
entitlement users have towards a FREE service is almost laughable best
summed up by:
Obviously,
privacy on the site is a much more serious issue that shouldn't be
mocked but it is surprising that so many people are surprised that
Facebook wants to use their information to make money. Facebook has
faced a number of lawsuits over the years but the most recent one was
just from January of this year. The basis of the suit stems from
Facebook gathering information from users "private" messages and selling
it to companies for advertising purposes. As of this post there was no
information that I could find citing a conclusion to this case but it
was referenced the google has faced similar suits. The complaint making
the suit liable is not that Facebook mines the information from users
but that they dont explicitly state in their privacy disclosures that
they have the right to do that.
Facebook
constantly takes hits in the media but it remains the most popular form
of social media. Continued scrutiny of their privacy policies could be
contributing to the speculated downturn of Facebook and without caution
moving forward could lead to its demise. Facebook needs to protect
themselves in this right because fighting off suits like these could
become very pricy.
